RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT
THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT CHILDREN
THAT ARE COVERED BY THE DEFERRED ACTION FOR CHILDHOOD ARRIVAL
(DACA) EXECUTIVE ORDER FROM DEPORTATION.
WHEREAS,
it is undisputed that children have been brought from their
native countries into the United States through no fault of their
own, but through the
fault of their parents or other family relatives who came here
illegally and who have shown no intention of applying for
citizenship through legal means, but who are using their children
as political leverage to continue to stay in the United States
themselves where they can continue to reap the benefits of
citizenship without becoming responsible and legal citizens; and
WHEREAS,
it is recognized that many of these children are not familiar
with any country other than the United States and often times may
not speak any language other than English through
the intentions of their parents or other relatives who are using
them as political leverage to continue to stay in the United
States themselves, where they can continue to reap the benefits
of citizenship without becoming responsible and legal citizens; and
WHEREAS, some
of these children
may have
become and perhaps will become productive members of our
society through attendance at our educational institutions and
through joining our workforce and through following all the
constitutional laws and rules of our society including qualifying
and applying for legal citizenship and swearing an oath of
allegiance to the United States of America and its constitution; and
WHEREAS, some
of these children
may have
contributed substantially to the economic growth of our
communities, provided
they do not join criminal gangs, use illegal drugs, sell illegal
drugs or engage in other illegal activities; and
WHEREAS,
President Donald Trump has implemented legislation that seeks to enforce the previously
agreed upon regulations of the Deferred Action For Childhood
Arrival program, thereby causing these children to facedeportation from only the only country many of them
have ever known; and
WHEREAS,
Congress should act to
preserve the future legal status of these deportable children
within the jurisdiction of the United States.
NOW
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF EAST ORANGE AS FOLLOWS:
1. We hereby request that
the Congress of the United States act expeditiously to continue to
preserve the legal
status of the children covered under the program referred to as
DACA.
2. A copy of this
Resolution is to be sent to the President of the United States,
the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honorable Donald
Payne Jr., the Majority and Minority leaders of the United States
Senate, and the honorable (?) U.S .
Senators Corey Booker and Robert Menendez.
