Close The Quack Medicine Loophole For Homeopathetic Remedies

James Randi's Challenge to Homeopathy Manufacturers and Retail Pharmacies

Did you know that the East Orange General Hospital was once named the Homeopathic Hostital of Essex County?

How proud are they of that?

Check the shelves of our local drug stores and supermarkets. They all profit from the ignorance of their customers. Don't be one of them, and tell the manager you don't appreciate having to put on your reading glasses to read the fine print to make sure you're not being swindled by homeopathic fraudulent "do nothing products at high prices." It always makes me wonder how much I can trust the prices and products that are supposedly real medicines sitting next to these fakes? Does Medicaid pay for phoney products along with the real thing? It sure does. Our dumb government doesn't care and the FDA doesn't want to get involved in real work of sorting out the fakes from the genuine medicines. So it's up to you! As usual.

CVS Pharmacy is a particularly vile homeopathic scam supporter. They not only sell a so-called "Flu Remedy" by the name of Oscillococcinum manufactured by Boiron, which currently sells in their stores for $19.99 (Another scam... can we call it $20.00?), but also manufacture and sell their own "alternative" CVS brand which sells for $14.99 (Oh, hell, let's just say $15 bucks). 2014 Update: The cost of fake sugar pills has gone up. As of February 17, 2014, CVS Pharmacy now sells the above product for $16.99. The scam still continues. As of this date, the price of Boiron's product has increased to $24.99.

Homeopathic medicine. Reduces duration and severity of flu symptoms. Symptoms of Flu: fever, chills, body aches and pains. No side effects. No drug interactions. Non-drowsy. Nature's No. 1 flu medicine. Take Oscillo at the first sign of flu-like symptoms! Children's Oscillococcinum (O-sill-o-cox-see-num) is safe, natural and easy to take. Oscillo is used by millions of people and is recommended by doctors around the world. Contains 1 g of sugar per dose. Made in France. Temporarily relieves symptoms of flu, such as fever, chills, body aches and pains.

Active Ingredient: Anas Barbariae Hepatis Et Cordis Extractum (200CK HPUS) The letters HPUS Indicate that this Ingredient is Officially Included in the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States. That means that the main ingredient, duck liver & duck heart meat, came in contact with water, and the water was then diluted until no molecules of the duck liver and heart remain. Inactive Ingredients: Lactose, Sucrose. So they are selling little sugar pills for $20.00.

There is a health warning... did you find it on their site? Just in case you missed it, as they intended you should, here it is:

  • Homeopathic Remedies Are No More Effective Than Placebos

  • Homeopathic medicine. Reduces duration & severity of symptoms. Reduces duration & severity of flu symptoms such as fever, aches, pains & chills. No known drug interactions or side effects. Non-drowsy. CVS pharmacist recommended. FSA eligible. Product of Canada. Temporarily relieves symptoms of flu such as fever, chills, body aches, and pains.

FSA eligible means: flexible spending account reimbursement. Read up on it here. It means that some of our taxpayer money is used to help finance these scam sugar pills as if they were real medicine.

Active Ingredients: Anas Barbariae Hepatis Et Cordis Extractum (Autolysate of Liver & Heart of the Duck) (200CK HPUS). Inactive Ingredients: Sucrose, Lactose. At least they tell you about the poor duck that isn't in the pills. So you only pay $15.00 for little sugar pills. Let's see, you could buy 5 pounds of sugar for $3.00 last time I checked.

2014 Update: The cost of fake sugar pills has gone up. As of February 17, 2014, CVS Pharmacy now sells the above product for $16.99. The scam still continues.

These fraudulent remedies in CVS Pharmacy are located right next to real medicines that might actually relieve some of the symptoms of the flu. As you should know, there is NO CURE for flu (influenza). It is a virus and has to run its course, like any cold virus. You can get a flu shot which will help to immunize your body against a particular type of flu, but not against every mutation of flu, and it mutates yearly.

The James Randi Educational Foundation awarded CVS Pharmacy their "Pigaseus" award on April Fools Day, 2011. They announced: The Funder Pigasus Award goes to CVS/pharmacy, for their work to support the manufacturers of scam “homeopathic” medications who sell up to $870 million a year in quack remedies to U.S. consumers. Homeopathic remedies contain none of the active ingredient they claim, and homeopathy has been shown to be useless in randomized clinical trials. CVS/pharmacy sells these quack products in thousands of stores across the U.S., right alongside real medicine, with no warning to consumers. Instead of giving their customers the facts about homeopathy, CVS/pharmacy executives are cashing in themselves by offering their own store-brand of the popular homeopathic product oscillococcinum. Oscillococcinum is made by grinding up the liver of a duck, putting none of it onto tiny sugar pills—that’s right, none of it—and then advertising the plain sugar pills as an effective treatment for flu symptoms.

In fairness, it should be said that Walgreen's also shares in the shameful practice of placing fraudulent homeopathic remedies next to genuine medicines, although their prices are not as exorbitant as those of CVS because they reduce the quantities of pills in their packages. And since when was spraying plain water in your mouth a remedy for asthma?

To their credit, Rite-Aid ,in East Orange, carries no homeopathic remedies and does not sell Oscillococcinum in any form.
